Instagram Tutorial

So, you have decided to jump on the bandwagon – you have finally signed up for Instagram and downloaded it on your mobile device, be it an iOS or an Android device. Good for you, because Instagram, the photo app that also moonlights as a social network, is one of the most used apps worldwide. In fact, it has become a staple in almost every person’s mobile device, especially since Facebook recently purchased it for a whopping 1 billion dollars. Unfortunately, this photo app/social network is not very easy to use. Some people have found its interface a bit challenging to master. Nevertheless, people forge on simply because of the ability to create filtering effects for every snapshot taken. Here is a quick tutorial that will help you master the most basic functions and processes of Instagram.

Signing Up for an Account

To be able to use Instagram, you must first sign up for an account. Assuming that you already downloaded the app from iTunes or Google play, you can sign up for the account through your mobile by running the app. The sign up process is straightforward. Just fill up the required fields and enter a valid email address and you are good to go. As soon as you are all signed up, log on to your Instagram account.

Taking Snapshots

As soon as you are logged on, you can begin using Instagram’s most basic functions, take photos. Select a subject, choose a filter effect, and then take the shot. It is as simple as that. Now, with regards to filter effects, Instagram has a lot of them. These numerous effects allow a user to texturize and alter the overall look of the shot. The filter effects are accessible whenever you take a snapshot at the bottom of the screen. By default, the filter effect will be at Normal. You can slide to the effect you want and it will show you pretty much how the shot will look like should you use that specific effect.

Sharing the Snapshot

As soon as you take the shot, you will have the option to add a caption or title for your photo. You will also be given the option to share the photo to your desired social networking account. Typically, most people share and post their shots on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. However, you can also do the same for your Tumblr, Flickr, Foursquare, and Posterous accounts. Obviously, any photo you post will instantly appear on your Instagram account. Remember, it is a social network too, right?

As soon as you post the photo, you might receive a lot of likes and comments from your followers. If those likes and comments start coming in, you will know through the News button below. A popup cloud will appear alerting you of how many likes, comments, and new people following you.

Follow and Be Followed

Like any other social networking account, Instagram actually allows you to create a profile, follow people, and gather your own followers. The app has functions for you to accomplish all of these. If you want to tinker with your profile, simply go into the Profile settings of your account and start editing what needs to be edited. To follow people, there is a search function for that. The function can invite people to join Instagram, find people already on Instagram, and search your Facebook and Twitter contacts that you can follow on Instagram. Follow them and they will most likely follow you back.
